XIV – Semper Paratus.

“Always prepared.”

Despite having all of the available rooms within the house to choose from, Marcus decided that if he was to become a real gladiator, he would live in the gladiator pens just off of the training sands outside the ludus. I did try to dissuade him, but his decision was made and his mind stalwart.

I had imparted as much wisdom as I could to the man, the way in which my father had trained his gladiators physically, though I knew that he had never tried to teach technique in any meaningful way and if I was to follow in his footsteps, I knew that soon I would have to arrange for a real Doctore to be present in my ludus.

Marcus must’ve been used to training his physical condition however, and that surprised me. His days within the ranks of the Roman legions had very obviously given him some insight into conditioning his body to be able to withstand a tremendous amount of physical exertion.

I was yet to buy or arrange for any real training apparatus for the training sands, though Marcus was apparently extremely resourceful when it came to repurposing everyday items to his cause. He had dragged a huge tree trunk up the hill and onto the training sands so that he could pick it up and put it back down over and over. Then he would hoist it onto his shoulders as best he could and walk it around the sands until he could take no more, and then finally he would drag it until his legs gave out.

I made sure that I kept food and water always available for the gladiator in training, and by all accounts after just a few days, Marcus looked as though his body had begun to repair itself, the malnutrition that hampered it a thing of the past.

At night, Marcus slept soundly in his small cell. It wasn’t a cell in the strictest sense of the word, though for all intents and purposes that was exactly what it was. I spent a lot of time inspecting every nook and cranny of the ludus when I wasn’t in the town picking up food or water for the next few days as I wanted to know every single inch of it. My mother and father had loved this place, and it did their memory the service they deserved to appreciate everything they had ever done for me.

Dinari had been his usual beautiful self the whole time. I kept him well fed with fish and bread as much as I could, though I knew that the money that I had was soon going to run out. Truth be told, if I had spent what I had planned on spending for Marcus, it would’ve already dried up, but it seemed as though it was the will of the Gods once again that we had a little breathing room before we had to do anything drastic.

Marcus had beseeched me to enter his name
